You may think that as winter dawns then gardening comes to somewhat of a standstill, however for the greenhouse owner it is quite the opposite. There are plenty of vegetables that can be successfully grown in the early months, especially if they are grown within containers should the weather get very extreme they are easily transferred indoors or perhaps within sheds.
However one easy way of keeping a greenhouse warm during the winter is to fill a bin full of hot water and leave it in the greenhouse, this radiates heat which sustains for a few days. Greenhouses are excellent for also retaining heat for the early morning winter sun meaning that plans that you could not grow outdoors will likely flourish within a greenhouse.
Lettuce is excellent to grow in from October to December, depending on quality of compost used. In December tmove the lettuces into 3 and a half-inch square pots of good quality compost (ideal if taken from the tomatoes grown in the summer!); the pots are placed twelve per tray in standard tomato trays . Ensure that the lettuces are raised in the pots to allow the air to curculate throughout them, this allows for much easier watering.

Greenhouses are specially built to protect your plants from the intense rays of the sun and from poor weather condition that an outside environment would bring. They are made of a metal or wooden frame and are covered with plastic, glass or fiberglass. The solar ability of these materials is what allows the plants inside enough of the needed sunlight to survive. There are many reasons why using a greenhouse can promote a better garden.

If your greenhouse includes good ventilation and heating system, you will be able to grow crops all year round. Many gardeners like using their greenhouse to start growing plants in the winter. By the time spring arrives these plants are ready to be moved into an outdoor garden to better enjoy their beauty. For those who grow herbs, the greenhouse will allow you the ability to grow them all year round leaving you with a fresh supply of herbs throughout the year. If you have not used a greenhouse before, you may want to start small until you get used to how your plants live in this environment and the type of care they need. You may want to start with tomatoes or a small herb garden. There are two types of greenhouse owners, those who garden for the fun of it and those who run a business by selling their plants. Depending on your use will depend on the type of greenhouse you need. Generally commercial greenhouses are larger, made of metal and glass or fiberglass and include a good heating and ventilation system. Those who are gardening as a hobby may not want to put the expense into a large greenhouse and choose a smaller one made of various material, some are even handmade. Some greenhouses include a sprinkler system allowing the plants to be water in the same manner that rain would water them outside.
